Frequently Asked Questions
- Are E-bikes allowed?
Yes – with caveats. E-bikes have the potential to allow you to ride faster than your bike handling skill. Your group riding skills should dictate whether you ride with the group (and which group) – not your e-bike speed. All the same group riding principles apply to e-bike riders, including not violating speed limits or impacting a smooth rotation. For “black rides” with unlimited speeds, e-bikes should remain in the back and not integrate into the rotation. Only pedal assisted e-bikes are allowed (class 1 and 3 e-bikes) – those with throttles are not allowed. - Are ear buds/headphones allowed?
The short answer: we strongly discourage anything that impairs your ability to hear communications from fellow riders. The old rule was to prohibit them, but hearing device technology has advanced rapidly and in some cases can actually augment hearing. But if you’re listening to music or podcasts, don’t wear them. - Are bike lights required?
Yes, we highly encourage both front and rear flashing lights, including during daylight hours. - Do I have to be a Velo member to ride?
No – but we encourage you to sign up if riding with our group becomes a regular thing. Also, buy a kit and join us for social events. Non-Velo members are welcome to join us as long as you comply with our standards for group riding. - What do I do if someone is exceeding the designated speeds for the paceline?
Let’s face it – it happens that sometimes the speed drifts a little slow or a little fast, especially on windy days. Keep your speed steady and remain at or near the applicable speed limit until they slow and you can pass. If they’ve created a gap in front of the group, establish the rotation behind them and let them go. They’ll likely realize their error and re-integrate safely.
